THE old adage “Beware the injured golfer” rang true as Michael Jones won the Bathgate Cheshire & North Wales Matchplay Championship at Wilmslow.
After finally shrugging off dogged resistance from Hawarden professional Alex Rowland, the 27-year-old Carden Park assistant revealed that he’d been struggling with a back problem for the past three months.
“I’ve been receiving treatment from a muscle imbalance and I probably won’t play again for a few more weeks to ensure I don’t do any more damage,” he said.
Jones admitted that he felt no ill-effects as he first eclipsed former winner Tim Maxwell, the Knutsford professional, 4&3 in the semi-finals then dispatched Rowland 2&1.
Jonathan Cheetham won the Bathgate Silica Sand Cheshire & North Wales Open after a three-way play-off at Mobberley then revealed he was about to draw a line under the season because he'd been unhappy with his game.
"I hadn't felt comfortable for some time and I was planning to spend the winter working on my swing," said the 44-year-old Styal-attached professional.
But it seems his coach Mark Pearson has already solved the problem.
"I saw him for a lesson a few days ago and his advice has given me back my confidence," he explained after denying assistants Tim Rich, from Royal Lytham and St Annes, and Ellesmere's Martyn Hamer, after they had matched his two-under-par total.
Yet the former Manchester Open and Leeds Cup winner almost missed his first round tee-time after arriving at the course with five minutes to spare because of a traffic jam.
Bathgate Silica Sand would like to thank the staff at Mobberley golf course for their hard work and dedication to ensure that the golf course was in fantastic condition for our event.
CHESHIRE and North Wales professionals are celebrating a double sponsorship deal from a firm that’s helped to create some of the world’s best golf courses.
Sandbach-based Bathgate Silica Sand have pledged £4,000 out of a combined £6,000 prize fund for next month’s county PGA Open at Mobberley and the Matchplay Championship which reaches its climax at Wilmslow in October.
PGA North Region secretary Graham Maly said: “The events will provide a great boost for the area which has some fantastic courses.”
The sponsor is a major UK supplier of sand, root zone and top dressings for golf courses for more than 60 years.
The Cheshire and North Wales Open is on September 20-21 and the matchplay finals on October 17.
